Is Animal Face indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree

The two parents

Face Off OG is an indica that Leafly traces to late-1990s California, when Archive Seeds was given seeds of an exceptional OG Kush phenotype; SeedFinder files it as a clone-only OG Kush selection.^2,9 Leafly notes that it shares its name with the 1997 film Face/Off.²

Animal Mints is a hybrid of Animal Cookies and SinMint Cookies, per Leafly, and a parent of Wedding Cake and Kush Mints.³ SeedFinder’s family tree traces Animal Cookies to Girl Scout Cookies × Fire OG and SinMint Cookies to Forum Cookies × Blue Power; SeedFinder also says Animal Mints was allegedly one of the first strains to come out of a collaboration between Cookies and Seed Junky, and notes accounts that give it other parents.^6,9,15

Carmel, which grows Animal Face in Ontario, describes the cross as a Face Off OG clone crossed with an Animal Mints male.^16,17

One seed pack, several cuts

The best-known cuts came out of seed hunts. Fig Farms hunted its Emerald Cup winner from seed, and High Times reports that Blue Face, which won Best in Show in 2023, came out of the same pack of Seed Junky Face Off OG × Animal Mints seeds; Fig Farms calls Blue Face the sister phenotype to its Animal Face, and Leaf Magazine describes Blue Face as the same cross.^23,24,25,26 Carmel says its own version was selected out of 100 phenotypes.^16,17

GreenState calls Fig Farms’ cut one of the more popular recent cuts of the strain.²⁷ Leafly also lists the name Animal Face #10; none of the sources we opened explains the number.¹

Clones and seeds

Seed versions are scarce. SeedFinder says Seed Junky’s Animal Face was never sold as feminized seed, and ILGM’s strain guide says the breeder was not much interested in selling seeds, so cloning is the next best bet.^6,18 Weedmaps says it is available as seeds or clones, and an Australian seller, Marijuana Seeds Australia, offers an autoflowering version.^4,28

Who bred it

Leafly, Weedmaps, SeedFinder, High Times and Carmel all credit Seed Junky Genetics, which SeedFinder says JBeezy started in a small Southern California garage in the early 2000s.^{1,4,6,16,24,29} One listing disagrees: Rythm’s product page on Weedmaps says Animal Face was “originally bred by the Washington-based brand From the Soil farms”, a claim none of the other sources we opened makes.⁸

What our lab data adds

Our strict name matching excluded 70 results across all product types (47 of them flower) sold under near-miss names, led by "Animal Face x Kush Mints" (30 results).³⁰ SeedFinder lists Animal Face × Kush Mints #11, also called Face Mints, as a separate Seed Junky cross.¹⁰
